With the assistance of Shedrub Development Fund, a Planned Giving organization has been created to help support and advise those who would like to make Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche and Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling monastery part of their estate.  The organization is called the Circle of Merit.

Circle of Merit

Through SDF, there are many ways to plan now to support the activities of Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche and the Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling monastery in the future.

We have created a Planned Giving organization called The Circle of Merit to assist individuals with estate planing today which can provide significant support for Rinpoche’s activities after you have passed away.

Here are a few basic ideas that you might find useful:

Bequests: a future gift, by will or trust, that allows the donor to retain all assets during his or her life. The bequest can be a specific amount, a percentage of the estate, or all or part of the residue once other beneficiaries have been honored.

Charitable Remainder Trusts: the donor places assets (cash, securities or other property) in a separately managed trust that provides you and/or your beneficiaries with income payments. At the end of the term of the trust or upon the donor’s life, the trust assets go to one or more of Rinpoche’s activities.

Charitable Gift Annuitites: in exchange for a transfer of cash, marketable securities or real estate, SDF can help you to contractually guarantee specified income payments to one or two beneficiaries for life.

Charitable Lead Trusts: the donor places assets (cash, securities or other property) in a separately managed trust that provides one of Rinpoche’s Activities with an annual donation (an arrangement that is especially useful in making pledge payments). At the end of the term of the trust or upon the donor’s death, the trust assets go to the donor’s heirs.

IRAs And Other Retirement Plan Assets: assets in an IRA and other qualified retirement plans are usually subject to both income and estate taxes for family heirs. This tax situation makes such assets an excellent choice for a charitable bequest.

Life Insurance: donors can assign to one of Rinpoche’s Activities the annual dividends paid on their life insurance policies, or they can make outright gifts of policies that have served their purposes, or they can purchase a policy and designate Ka-Nying Monastery as the beneficiary.

Planned giving may provide many benefits and tax advantages:
  • Reduce or eliminate taxes on capital gains

  • Convert low-yielding assets to a higher income stream

  • Obtain a current income tax charitable deduction

  • Provide life-long income for yourself and/or another beneficiary

  • Eliminate or reduce federal estate taxes

  • Pass assets on to heirs with a minimum of transfer taxes

Donations of stock or other publicly traded securities should be sent to Shedrub Development Fund using the following information:

First Clearing LLC / DTC #0141 / Shedrub Development Fund, Inc. / Account #3420-6534

If making a donation of stock, or other securities,  please notify Sharon Andres at Most securities that are traded on the New York or American Stock Exchanges, NASDAQ, and other publiclytraded securities are accepted. Securities will be sold and the donor will be provided with a receipt giving the amount of the proceeds from the sale.

BENEFIT TO DONOR: Gifting long term securities may yield a greater tax advantage than giving cash. Capital gains tax is avoided on profitable sales.

Non-publicly traded securities may only be accepted after approval by the SDF Board of Directors. In some cases, a qualified appraisal may be required.   BENEFIT TO DONOR: Charitable tax deduction. Capital gains tax is avoided on profitable sales.
