Stock and Legacy Giving

Donating Stocks, Bonds, and Mutual Funds

Making gifts of stock, bonds or mutual funds is a great way to support Shedrub Development Fund and can provide you with significant tax savings.

Appreciated Assets

When you donate assets that have increased in value, you benefit in two ways.  You will avoid capital gains tax on the profit you made, (which may be substantial), plus the fully appreciated fair market value of your gift on the day you give will be counted as a deductible charitable donation. The way to do this is to transfer these assets directly to Shedrub Development Fund, which can be easily done through your broker or financial advisor.

Depreciated Assets

You can also donate stocks, bonds or mutual funds that have decreased in value, though it’s handled differently. To receive the maximum tax credit, you should sell the assets first then donate the proceeds to Shedrub Development Fund.  That way you can claim a loss on the sale of the assets while counting the gift as a deductible charitable donation.

Each situation is unique, so be sure to consult your broker or financial advisor before making your donation. The information that you will have to provide your broker is the following:

Custodian: Gage-Wiley & Co., Inc., 120 King St, Northampton, MA 01060
Contact Name: Thomas Lesser
Contact Number: 413-584-7331
Account Name: Shedrub Development Fund, Inc.
Account Number: 3420-6534
First Clearing LLC
DTC # 0141

Electronic transfers of stocks, bonds and mutual funds come through without identifying information, which can delay the process of crediting you for the tax-deductible donation. To ensure that you receive prompt acknowledgement of your gift, please forward the following information when you transfer your appreciated assets:

  • Your name and contact information
  • Number of shares and name of the assets being transferred (i.e. 100 shares of Apple)
  • Date of Transfer

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Tom Lesser, President of the Board of Directors of Shedrub Development Fund, at [email protected] or (413) 584-7331 (if you are calling from outside of the USA you will need to add the prefix +1).
